My Journey so far…

I started making blades as an apprentice under Jack O’Brien in 1997.

Jack taught me the fundamentals of designing, forging and finishing a knife. Before this I knew nothing of metalwork or what a rabbit hole knifemaking can be. Since then I’ve had numerous mentors who have been instrumental in my career.

In 1999 I started to take jewellery courses, and ultimately went to school, to learn how to better embellish my bladework. A whole new rabbit hole was opened up for me and it was here that I learnt the basics of gems, jewellery, casting and moldmaking.

All of my art is ‘sole authorship’ - every element, from leather sheaths, to heat treatment, to carefully set gemstones etc, has been done by me.

In 2010, under the guidance of Mastersmith Wally Hayes, I took the plunge and went to the US to get my Journeyman Smith rating with the ABS.

Sadly it was at this point my father grew very ill and I walked away from my workshop to look after him. I simply could not focus on my work and attend to my fathers needs from day to day.

Now I return to my workshop with the goal of obtaining my Master Smith rating in the not too distant future. I welcome you to join me in on my adventure and follow along with my progress.
